The Flexi-School™

June 12th, 2009 by The Excel Design Team

All Excel homes offer flexible design – if a homeowner wants to add some custom features, that’s no problem – but the Flexi-School concept takes flexibility to a whole new level.

flexischool1The Flexi-School uses a series of modules that connect to form structures of various sizes to meet a variety of educational needs. Each classroom is its own module and each hallway is a module, with six-sided connection units serving as hubs. A four-sided connection unit is also available (see the wing on the left above).

flexicschool2The “kit of parts” includes classrooms, offices, hall units, libraries, lunch rooms and more. But the beauty of the Flexi-School lies in its flexibility. Unlike most modular structures, the Flexi-School can be rearranged with minimal effort, and can be expanded or reduced to meet changing educational needs. Chases and floor panel access also provide flexibility when making future technological upgrades.

flexischool3BOTTOM LINE: As the needs of our educational systems change, so should the facilities in which that learning takes place. This easily expandable modular design saves both time and money, freeing up more of these resources for expanding minds inside the school.

What type of schools? There does not appear to be any cafeteria space and how would you design a gym that would match the pod design? But I do like the expandable concept.

Plan your dream facility, then build it in affordable modules as your membership grows. This will be attractive to church communities, too.

I like the acoustic privacy benefit from not having common walls in the units.

    Rob:
While not shown a cafeteria could easily be built complete with equipment. This is just a concept for discussion. We can design “pods” to fit just about any need. As for a gym, this would be accomplished with a combination of modules and panilized construction.
